Kgatleng Cultural Village
Mafehleng Nature Reserve, previously known as Gawie De Beer Nature Reserve is an ancient Sotho-Tswana settlement complex dating back to around 1400 CE. For many year the Bafokeng lived in the area and in 1836 after Sebobane married Nkadimeng a Bafokeng Princess and daughter of Morena Mare, Sebobane was given land with his Makgolokwe people. This was a place were rivers met to form a basin, the Klip, Wilge, Vaal, Vet and Riet rivers. Due the the activity of the water pouring and forming like a whirlpool / steering effect the place was named Mafehleng (Steering place) and the Makgolokwe of Sebobane were the called Makgolokwe-a-Mafehleng. Their ancient stone age ruins are still sen in good formation in the nature reserve and also graves discovered including one of the great King Sebobane. Makgolokwe-a-Mafehleng have applied for the recognition of the Mafehleng Nature Reserve as a National Heritage Side, which will bring the National Heritage sites in Fezile Dabi to two (Both in Metsimaholo), one World Heritage Site and many others to still investigate further. Here you will find the stone age ruins which have been erroneously attributed to the Khoi people in the past by the European settlers who arrived in the area after the 1890s.
Makgolokwe-a-Mafehleng have identified the tourism opportunity in building a cultural village to display the various cultures that are found in the area, the development of the cultural village with a lodge that offers conference facilities will boost the once booming tourism sector in the area and contribute to job creation.
